Bundeszentrale für politische Bildung

Documentary

A video series on Jewish life in Germany was produced for the Federal Agency for Civic Education. (Bundeszentrale für politische Bildung) This animation project was a very exciting task, both in terms of content and technology. For the most part, we didn’t sit at the editing table as usual, but were busy preparing historical drawings, photos and documents in Photoshop so that they could be animated in After Effects. This mainly meant cropping content (e.g. a portrait of a person) and digitally closing the “hole” created in the background.

By digitally shifting the generated image planes, it was possible to create the parallax effect, i.e. a perceived sense of depth in the moving images. In total, nine videos were produced for the project, five of which were edited by us. The images were deliberately edited very slowly in order to give the viewers the opportunity to let them take effect and not lose focus on the voiceover. Furthermore, discreet sound effects were added in selected places to enhance the visual experience.
